Andri Rohtla, an attorney-at-law specializing in criminal and misdemeanor proceedings, has been promoted to associate partner at LEVIN. Andri has had an outstanding career at LEVIN and, in recent years, has been one of the firm’s leading figures in the field of criminal law, handling both high-profile domestic criminal cases and international extradition proceedings.
According to Partner Paul Keres, “Andri has proven himself to be a defense attorney who can be trusted with even the most complex and high-profile cases. He is thorough, meticulous in procedural matters, and does not tolerate the state cutting corners—and this is reflected in the results. We expect that in his new role, Andri will provide every client with even more personalized attention and a more strategic defense.”
Andri Rohtla has changed Supreme Court precedent and defended clients in Estonia’s most high-profile criminal cases
Together with Paul Keres, Andri has defended clients in several high-profile cases: the criminal case against Parvel Pruunsild ended in an acquittal, and in the so-called “Tallinn Port” case, Ain Kaljurand was not found guilty in any of the charges. In extradition cases, he works closely with U.S. defense attorneys. While representing Ivan Turõgin, the Supreme Court reversed its nearly decade-long position in 2023 and ruled that pretrial detention pending extradition may be replaced with electronic monitoring or bail.
Andri also represented Renek Tiku in extradition proceedings in which the U.S. sought his extradition in connection with charges in one of the largest international healthcare fraud cases.
In addition, Andri has represented clients before the European Court of Human Rights, participated on behalf of the Estonian Bar Association in amending the Electronic Communications Act, and contributed to legal scholarship both as a seminar instructor at the University of Tartu and by participating in panel discussions alongside esteemed judges, prosecutors, and attorneys.
“I am grateful for the trust placed in me and am ready to take on even more of this work alongside my team, assisting clients both in and out of the courtroom,” says Andri.
